Sharp Reading teaching with Hilton
After today's session with Hilton I feel really motivated about continuing working with the small group of Year 2-3 students on stage 3 Sharp Reading strategies. Before this session I had only worked with this group one time. I'd attempted explicit teaching of unpacking sentences and it was probably quite a confusing lesson for us all! Afterwards I was wondering if they were ready for stage 3 so today's session with Hilton was great timing.
Explicit teaching - My explanation of the learning for the lesson and orientation to the book ( The King's Birthday) was fine. Hilton said at stage 3 you wouldn't normally do such a front load of the story from the pictures but it was appropriate for these learners. My modelling of unpacking sentences was ok too, though I need to remember to ask the students to look at the text while I unpack.
Guided practice - this is where my first lesson fell over (well I didn't really do it) and what Hilton stepped in and modelled today. It was slowly breaking up each sentence and guiding the children to unpack it.."so who was talking?" "And where was he?" "what's a library?" etc. ..."now who want to have a go at unpacking that sentence.." (the sentence we've just discussed). When a student had a go it was very supported. It was hard work for teachers and students so Hilton suggested doing a page or two of stage 2 (The 5 Bits) to relieve the pressure and move the story along (ie read a page, turn book over and ask children what happened). Then we went back to Stage 3 for another page of students having a go of "I think that means..." At the end of the session all student had had decent attempts and were achieving 2-3s.
Hilton's comment "It will take some time for them to understand and be able to unpack a sentence. However, persevere - I can't think of anything more important to be doing with them."
I'm aiming to schedule time to work on my Sharp Reading teaching at least two times a week. It was amazing to see the progress in just two lessons. Next steps are more guided practice moving towards independent practice. I'll need to continue to work on the online learning modules too - I had paused the online modules as I wasn't up to the next stage with my practice but after chatting with Hilton I will keep going with that learning.
I'm looking forward to further chat with other teachers and seeing how we can support each other with this as I really think it can work for our kids and will make good shifts in their reading.
