Just-In-Time maths w Rob

Our maths curriculum action team had the opportunity to observe some of Rob's demo lessons at Ardmore School last week. Rob modelled with a year 5/6 group how you can have 6 questions around the room, kids buddy up and move around answering as many as poss. Teachers rove listening in to chat. After 20ish mins of problem solving, students were able to select to go back to one of the problems and talk more about it with one of the teachers i.e. what was hard, what was easy, common strategies. This is an engaging and efficient way for a teacher to check in and see where kids are at and tune in to what misconceptions there may be and what next learning steps are. A way more efficient and engaging way to assess than GLoSS. We've planned to do this in Totara next week - it'll be great formative assessment. strengthening school wide PB4L

We had a good session at our staff meeting today going over 'best practice strategies for responding to minor/major behaviours' One that I am going to focus on in  my teaching is using signals or non-verbal cues. This will be good for me and Room 1 students as I realise sometimes my own voice is loud and can be dominating and I revert to a loud 'oi' or such comment sometimes too.   Rather than using a loud voice to discourage noise, I am going work with the class to come up with some signals we can all use when it's getting too loud and we want someone to shush so we can focus on our learning etc.  If we co-construct this together, the children will have ownership of it and will hopefully feel empowered, or have another way, to tell someone to shush. I'll display pics for visual prompts, make sure we have lots of practise and reinforce with positive comments (and non-verbal cues ;) I will ask Kalo for feedback as to whether she notices my loud voice...

Maths Games and Number Sense - great ideas from Marie Hirst

 Maths -  This video (Marie Hirst, NZ ) highlights importance of our maths teaching having engaging activities to build number sense - with an emphasises low entry and high ceiling activities. Many practical, useful and fun ideas for teaching maths.  It was interesting to see how she adapted games to add interest, extend learning, extend talk etc. Games Consider :  Do game engages all at the same time?  Does it depend on speed or luck?  Goldilocks principal (not too easy, not too hard).  Are games easy to learn, prepare?  A good tip is to make little videos made that show children how to play games. Tip - in games, set up so it's pairs against pairs - means more discussion.
