Autocrat add-on

 After seeing what offerings were available in our online Term 3 Toolkits - I decided I'd use some of this lockdown learning time to upgrade my skills with sheets.

The first toolkit Dave offered was Autocrat to Automate. Autocrat is an add-on for google sheets. It's a mail merge tool that takes raw data from sheets and merges it into docs, slides etc. that could be used for personalised letters, certificates etc.


In this video Dave shared, Eric Curtis uses Autocrat to show how easy it is to generate certificates for his webinars. He has a google form (which includes participants name, email and a quiz) which is completed by participants that populates the sheet. He had a template certificate ready in docs for those that passed and a template letter ready for those that did not pass. Using Autocrat, you can insert text, hyperlinks and also images (by inserting a web address that points to an image). He shows how he can set rules in Autocrat so that those who pass would get emailed a certificate, and those who did not get an email and letter with links etc. and a message to try again.

I was thinking of many ways we can possibly use Autocrat - for instance for StepsWeb certificates, personalised letters giving students their passwords, welcome letters to families from our school, letters about attendance, automating the letters our admin make for WINZ re purchasing chromebooks...

    I remember learning about something similar when I did my Excel course many years ago. Good that that option is available on Google Sheets. Sounds like something that can cut down on a lot of admin time.

Just-In-Time maths w Rob

Our maths curriculum action team had the opportunity to observe some of Rob's demo lessons at Ardmore School last week. Rob modelled with a year 5/6 group how you can have 6 questions around the room, kids buddy up and move around answering as many as poss. Teachers rove listening in to chat. After 20ish mins of problem solving, students were able to select to go back to one of the problems and talk more about it with one of the teachers i.e. what was hard, what was easy, common strategies. This is an engaging and efficient way for a teacher to check in and see where kids are at and tune in to what misconceptions there may be and what next learning steps are. A way more efficient and engaging way to assess than GLoSS. We've planned to do this in Totara next week - it'll be great formative assessment. Strengthening learning partnerships with whānau is a priority for us at Park Estate.  We want to share our learning with our families and ensure our students have an audience for their learning.  I created this video using Tellagami and iMovie.  Tellagami is an app I have on my iPhone.  I took a photos of my computer screen with my phone, drew on them with the photo editor and used these for the backgrounds.  It would have been good to have used screenshots instead for better quality. It's currently on a page in our school website I'm not sure if it's had any views from our families.  We can share this whānau meetings to let them know it's there, ask if there were any other videos we could create and share for their interest/use etc.  It would be good to have this recorded in other languages our families use also.
