leadership coaching

2 day workshop - introduction to leadership coaching..

This coaching framework is from Positive Psychology. Facilitators used tunnel image - the GRO (goal, reality, options) is the wider part of funnel - go wide, good to generate 5-6 options and the WTH (will, tactics, habbits) is the giving it a bit more direction, narrowing down.

Coach - move from one place to another.

80/20 conversations - coach/coachee.  Coach uses rich generative questions, actively listens, builds on success, stretches.

Frame goal statements 'I am/I have' as if have done it, are doing it - past/present tense.

Describe reality - ' 'description of reality' a favourite since Bill Rogers in the 90s

Options - 5-6 is ideal

will/tactics/habbit - commiting to action, mapping things out

Active listening and being strengths focussed is an important aspect.

It was good to hear and think about how these conversations can be used in many settings and in many ways - e.g. with students, with colleagues, with own children.  As there's now 3 of us at our school, and others with this training at schools nearby - we will be able to work together.  The facilitators suggested 'trios' - coach, coachee and observer - as a good way to continue learning coaching.

We had several opportunities over the two days to practise our coaching on one another.  As coachee, I had conversations with others which helped clarify some next steps in these areas:

-Tier 2 team - Circle Time - by end of term 3 I have completed all student interviews and planned first small group circle time sessions with Tessa so that we can get our first group up and running. This is on my calendar for week 10.

- maths - by mid term 4 I have documented and moderated how JAM and GLOSS are used so that these assessments are used in a consistent and useful way.

-SENCo - learning support processes - by end of 2020 I have led a review of our SENCo referral processes so that we have robust processes in place to support learners with Tier 2 and Tier 3 needs.

So next step is to go back to notes and check in I'm doing what I said I was going to.

  1. This is a really powerful framework. I like how its strength based and owned by the coachee so people are choosing their own goals and next steps based on their current reality. We will need to be deliberate in ensuring we practice it lots so we have it in our kete to use when appropriate.

  2. I agree, a very powerful framework. It is interesting that a good coach don't need to have any background knowledge or skills of the person he/she is coaching. Purely based on the questioning and paraphrasing you support the coachee to set an achievable goal.
