18 June TLIF Workshop #1 - attended with Susan Sandretto. (SS)
  • Project monitoring and evaluation - we will be assigned a 'monitor' who will receive our checkpoint reports and provide feedback. First checkpoint report is due July 20 and will outline what's happened so far.  
  • Budget - at first checkpoint report need to invoice for 10% of budget.  Prior to July checkpoint budget needs to be revised.  Changes to include more accurate costings re teacher release days (increased teachers involved, time for coordinating, planning, reflecting, data collection reporting to ensure teachers adequate time to contribute to quality inquiry), time with SS, kai for teachers, offsite venue for some of the release. 
Term 2 actions:
  • student and teacher interview formats - teacher and student interviews and student surveys 
  • focus group student group selected - need a selection of Year 4 and 5 students. Will need to be quite a few due to transience.
  • Ethics/video consent form - good practice to have permission to use video/info from this inquiry as may want to use it in the future.
  • Term 3, weeks 1-2, TLIF team (Sally, Karli, Nat, Isabel, myself) to record baseline science lesson.
  • Friday week 3, Term 3, booked in for first team day with Susan. workshop re dialogic practice, co-construct observational tool.
  • Check in with Susan Heeps - book Term 3 planning day week 4
  • Baseline PAT Junior Science: Thinking with evidence sorted - mid week 2, Term 2

 In preparation for our new student (E) enrolling next term, Beth (Speech Language Therapist), shared some excellent learning about Down syndrome, Makaton and Core Boards. Down syndrome: ( full presentation ) students with Down syndrome may take longer to acquire social skills, communication and thinking skills and physical skills (gross and fine motor) visual learning is helpful e.g. matching, selecting, naming Auditory memory and auditory processing delays mean we will need to increase our response time (wait time) and presenting information one step at a time Muscle hypotonia - lower muscle tone - avoid highly physical activity such as trampolines Due to differences in structure of ear, children are susceptible to frequent ear infections and children will have lower immunity so respiratory/sinus infections more frequent (maybe more absences) Gross motor skills - discourage 'W' sitting, foot stability in chairs important Positive reinforcement will be really important.  Beth...

Just-In-Time maths w Rob

Our maths curriculum action team had the opportunity to observe some of Rob's demo lessons at Ardmore School last week. Rob modelled with a year 5/6 group how you can have 6 questions around the room, kids buddy up and move around answering as many as poss. Teachers rove listening in to chat. After 20ish mins of problem solving, students were able to select to go back to one of the problems and talk more about it with one of the teachers i.e. what was hard, what was easy, common strategies. This is an engaging and efficient way for a teacher to check in and see where kids are at and tune in to what misconceptions there may be and what next learning steps are. A way more efficient and engaging way to assess than GLoSS. We've planned to do this in Totara next week - it'll be great formative assessment. Strengthening learning partnerships with whānau is a priority for us at Park Estate.  We want to share our learning with our families and ensure our students have an audience for their learning.  I created this video using Tellagami and iMovie.  Tellagami is an app I have on my iPhone.  I took a photos of my computer screen with my phone, drew on them with the photo editor and used these for the backgrounds.  It would have been good to have used screenshots instead for better quality. It's currently on a page in our school website I'm not sure if it's had any views from our families.  We can share this whānau meetings to let them know it's there, ask if there were any other videos we could create and share for their interest/use etc.  It would be good to have this recorded in other languages our families use also.
